Flowing Paperscapes Memorial LandscapeFlowing Paperscapes Memorial LandscapeFlowing Paperscapes Memorial Landscape is an innovative memorial landscape design that transforms the historical site of a former paper mill into a meaningful public space, seamlessly integrating commemoration with contemporary recreational functionality. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project spans 5,600 square meters and employs a sophisticated geometric array of undulating landforms inspired by the delicate yet flexible characteristics of paper, creating a dynamic series of flowing waves that serve both as a memorial and an interactive landscape element. The design's primary purpose is twofold: to preserve the cultural significance of a historic paper mill and to commemorate victims of World War II air raids at the site. The landscape's distinctive wave formations are meticulously engineered using a precise 90cm by 180cm grid system with 20cm height variations, ensuring both aesthetic harmony and structural integrity. The materiality of the project combines reinforced concrete and metal with carefully selected vegetation, including Manila grass, Pennisetum purpureum Schumach, and Miscanthus, which not only enhances the visual appeal but also pays homage to the site's paper-making heritage. The design philosophy transcends traditional memorial architecture by creating an inclusive space that balances solemn remembrance with vibrant public life, featuring varying wave heights that double as play areas for children while maintaining the dignity of its commemorative function. This innovative approach to memorial design demonstrates how contemporary landscape architecture can successfully merge historical preservation, emotional resonance, and practical functionality, earning recognition through the prestigious A' Design Award for its contribution to landscape planning and garden design.
