Petit Duc BenchPetit Duc BenchPetit Duc Bench is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional materials and contemporary aesthetics, created by Belgian designer Julien Hac. This distinctive bench, crafted from unique schistose sandstone known as Moellons, represents a significant achievement in sustainable and locally-sourced furniture design. The bench's design philosophy centers on two fundamental values: sharing and responsibility, manifesting these principles through its convivial nature and thoughtful material selection. The structure comprises a substantial stone tablet supported by refined metallized and powder-coated steel legs, engineered specifically to bear the weight of the distinctive stone surface. Measuring 340mm x 2000mm x 450mm and weighing 80 kg, the bench showcases exceptional craftsmanship through its various available finishes: Raw, Honed Light, Honed Dark, and Sabled. The production process involves sophisticated techniques, including single wire machine cutting, CNC machining, hand-finished chamfers, and a meticulous metal treatment process that ensures durability against both corrosion and UV exposure. This versatile piece, suitable for both outdoor and indoor settings, emerged from extensive research into maximizing the value of local Belgian stone resources, particularly from the Warche quarry in Wallonia. The design's excellence has been recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its innovative use of materials, aesthetic appeal, and commitment to local craftsmanship. The bench's development, completed between January 2021 and January 2022, required overcoming significant technical challenges related to the stone's density and unique properties, resulting in a piece that successfully combines functionality, aesthetic appeal, and cultural significance.
