Wu Xing PackageWu Xing PackageWu Xing Package is an innovative packaging design that artfully interprets the traditional Chinese concept of the Five Elements through a sophisticated combination of animal illustrations and structural design. Created by designer Siwei Lai, this remarkable work transforms the classical painting box format into a multifunctional display system that seamlessly merges traditional aesthetics with contemporary functionality. The design, measuring 18×27×4 centimeters in its closed form and expanding to 53×22.5×9 centimeters when displayed, features a series of illustrated cards that represent each of the five elements, uniquely characterized through animal symbolism. A distinguishing feature of the design is its incorporation of sunrise and sunset motifs within each illustration, symbolizing the cyclical nature of the Wu Xing philosophy and the perpetual flow of time. The package's transformation from a book-shaped box to a self-standing display rack demonstrates exceptional innovation in structural design, allowing for optimal presentation of the complete card series while maintaining practical transportability. This sophisticated interpretation of traditional Chinese philosophy through modern design earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, acknowledging its contribution to cultural preservation through innovative design solutions. The project, completed in Taichung City, Taiwan, represents a harmonious blend of cultural symbolism, practical functionality, and aesthetic refinement, showcasing the designer's ability to translate complex philosophical concepts into tangible design solutions.
