Exotic Mashups ResidentialExotic Mashups ResidentialExotic Mashups Residential is an award-winning interior design project that exemplifies the sophisticated fusion of colonial style with contemporary living spaces, masterfully executed in a 70-ping (approximately 231.4 square meters) model house in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The design, created by Shin-Lan Chao, showcases a remarkable blend of Eastern and Western design elements, characterized by its innovative use of vintage furniture collections and classic Southern seas aesthetics. The spatial arrangement features an open-ended layout that seamlessly connects the living room, dining area, and kitchen, with a strategically placed island serving as a subtle demarcation between cooking and dining spaces. The design's distinctive elements include multiple French windows that maximize natural light penetration, creating a bright, tropical atmosphere throughout the interior. A notable architectural feature is the descending floor balcony, which bridges the public area and study, enhanced by carefully placed greenery that adds vitality to the space. The private quarters comprise a main bedroom and a guest room, where homogeneous materials create an introspective atmosphere while maintaining the overall colonial aesthetic. The design earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its excellence in spatial planning, material selection, and cultural integration. The project's success lies in its thoughtful incorporation of vintage furnishings, including button-trimmed sofas with edging and tight, sunken barrel straight backboards with framed headboards, all of which contribute to a rich, historically-informed aesthetic that pays homage to the golden age of colonial design while meeting contemporary functional requirements.
