Swing Ao StoolSwing Ao StoolSwing Ao Stool is an innovative seating solution that revolutionizes the conventional approach to sitting by incorporating dynamic movement into its design. Created by Japanese designer Takusei Kajitani, this ergonomic furniture piece challenges the traditional notion of static seating by implementing a sophisticated tension structure that enables the seat to move freely in response to the user's pelvic movements. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, features a unique suspension system where the seat is connected to the base through a carefully engineered rod and hole mechanism. The stool's construction comprises solid black cherry wood with an indigo-dyed finish, measuring 300mm in diameter and 450mm in height, with the seat upholstered in artificial leather over a 60mm thick urethane cushion. This versatile piece offers two distinct sitting modes: a dynamic mode that promotes active sitting and engages core muscles through gentle swinging movements, and a static mode with an 8-degree angled seat surface that encourages proper spinal alignment. The design draws inspiration from tensegrity principles popularized by Buckminster Fuller and incorporates insights from the Alexander Technique, particularly focusing on the body's natural balance mechanisms. The innovative suspension system consists of 3mm dinghy rope connecting the upper seat structure to the lower leg structure, creating a floating sensation that promotes healthy movement of the pelvis, spine, and surrounding muscles, effectively transforming a simple stool into a therapeutic seating device that enhances body awareness and physical activation.
