Day Code Chinese AlmanacDay Code Chinese AlmanacDay Code Chinese Almanac is an innovative graphic design project that reimagines traditional Taiwanese calendar systems through contemporary visual communication, created by designer Wan Fen Chen. This culturally significant work transforms conventional textual almanac information into an elegant system of icons and visual elements, effectively bridging traditional Chinese fortune-telling practices with modern design sensibilities. The almanac, which won the Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, represents a sophisticated fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary design thinking. Measuring 100mm x 36mm x 143mm, the calendar employs Risograph printing techniques and perfect binding to achieve a distinctive vintage aesthetic, characterized by random derangement and uneven coloring that adds to its unique visual appeal. The design incorporates traditional Taiwanese decorative elements, such as floral pattern tiles and iron window motifs, while maintaining functionality through carefully considered layout and information hierarchy. The almanac serves both practical and cultural purposes, providing solar and lunar calendar information alongside traditional fortune-telling guidance for activities such as business ventures, marriages, and relocations. Notable features include expanded note sections and specially designed sticker systems that transform the traditional calendar format into an interactive diary-like experience. This design innovation addresses the challenge of declining printed calendar usage in the digital age by introducing engaging functional elements that encourage daily interaction and personal documentation. The project, completed in 2022, demonstrates a thoughtful approach to preserving cultural practices while adapting them for contemporary use, particularly focusing on elements relevant to modern life while respectfully filtering traditional content to maintain cultural significance without overwhelming modern users.
