Stadium SC Freiburg Wayfinding SystemStadium SC Freiburg Wayfinding SystemStadium SC Freiburg Wayfinding System is an innovative architectural communication design solution that exemplifies the seamless integration of form and function in modern stadium infrastructure. Developed by German designer Thomas Geissert, this comprehensive wayfinding system employs an orthogonal design language that harmoniously complements the stadium's architectural elements while facilitating intuitive navigation for visitors. The system, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, features a sophisticated implementation of the Trade Gothic typeface, chosen for its narrow profile and exceptional legibility. The design encompasses both exterior and interior navigation, guiding visitors from parking areas, bus stops, and tram stations through to their designated seats within the 34,700-capacity venue. Distinguished by its clear formal language and strategic use of high-contrast typography, the system utilizes colored aluminum panels with specialized foil applications to create durable, visually striking directional elements. The wayfinding solution demonstrates particular innovation in its hierarchical information structure, which effectively organizes and presents navigational data while maintaining visual cohesion with the venue's established identity. This systematic approach not only facilitates efficient crowd movement but also contributes to the stadium's architectural narrative, creating a strong sense of place and identity. The design's implementation, completed between February 2020 and summer 2021, represents a significant advancement in sports facility wayfinding, combining practical functionality with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities.
