Defy Communicative Visual BookDefy Communicative Visual BookDefy Communicative Visual Book is an innovative graphic design project that reimagines the visual presentation of anarchist philosophy through a distinctly Taiwanese cultural lens. Created by designer Jin-Zhi Liao in 2021, this communicative book design masterfully integrates symbolic street objects commonly found in Taiwan's urban landscape to create a powerful visual narrative about social resistance and cultural identity. The design employs a sophisticated combination of industrial packaging paper and spot varnishing techniques, featuring a carefully curated color palette of red, black, and white to evoke themes of rebellion and revolution. The cover design incorporates everyday objects such as traffic cones, tires, barrels, and benches - items frequently used in street barricades - to create a visual language that resonates with local experiences while exploring broader themes of anarchism. A particularly notable design element is the incorporation of glasses as a central visual metaphor, enhanced through spot varnish coating to achieve a realistic texture, symbolizing new perspectives on anarchist thought. The project, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in combining cultural sensitivity with innovative design techniques. The design successfully bridges the gap between abstract political philosophy and tangible daily experiences, making complex ideological concepts accessible through familiar visual elements while maintaining high standards of professional print design execution.
