Niko Rotating PlanesNiko Rotating PlanesNiko Rotating Planes is an innovative furniture design concept that exemplifies space-efficient solutions through its unique rotating mechanism. This dynamic structure, designed by Lorenzo Quaglietta, consists of two rotating planes mounted on a triangular-sectioned support element that can be wall-mounted or attached to a movable base. The design's primary innovation lies in its ability to transform from a fully functional dining table into a compact wall fixture, effectively eliminating spatial bulk when not in use. Originally conceived for a 32-square-meter living space, this versatile piece demonstrates exceptional space optimization through its ingenious mechanical solution. The rotating planes feature a sophisticated design with a longitudinal cut and gradually reducing thickness, complemented by a semicircular cut at one extremity. The structure can be fabricated from various materials resistant to flexure, including wood, iron, and plastic, and can be produced through multiple manufacturing methods ranging from traditional craftsmanship to modern 3D laser fabrication. The standard prototype dimensions include rotating planes of 120 cm in length and 40 cm in width, supported by an 80 cm x 40 cm base element with a height of 50 cm, though these dimensions can be adapted for various applications. The design's versatility extends beyond its primary function as a dining table, as it can be modified to serve as a work bench, bedside table, or even a double bed, depending on dimensional specifications. This innovative approach to furniture design earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its contribution to addressing contemporary spatial challenges in urban living environments.
