50s News-gift Paper Poster50s News-gift Paper Poster50s news-gift paper Poster is an innovative graphic design project that seamlessly blends historical preservation with contemporary visual communication, created by designer Jesvin Yeo and art director Alvin Ng. This culturally significant design work, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, reimagines traditional Chinese newspaper content from 1952-1956 as a versatile gift wrapping paper and decorative poster. The design features carefully selected historical newspaper content overlaid with bold, auspicious Chinese characters such as Fu (luck), Shou (longevity), Cai (wealth), Lu (prosperity), Le (happiness), Ji (auspiciousness), and Xi (double happiness), each printed in vibrant pantone colors including red, hot pink, and orange. Measuring 360mm x 580mm, this full newspaper-sized creation serves as both a functional gift wrapper and a displayable poster, effectively bridging generational gaps by connecting contemporary audiences with Singapore's cultural heritage. The design's sophisticated integration of traditional elements with modern typography creates a fresh aesthetic appeal while preserving historical significance. This innovative approach to cultural preservation through design was showcased at the prestigious 798 Art Zone in Beijing in 2012, demonstrating its impact on both local and international design communities. The project, completed between February 2011 and January 2012, overcame significant production challenges, including the complexity of full newspaper-size printing and the implementation of eight distinct pantone colors, to create a unique product that serves as both a practical item and a meaningful cultural artifact.
