Nessie, A Monster Of Rock. Urban BenchNessie, A Monster Of Rock. Urban BenchNessie, a monster of rock. Urban Bench is an innovative urban furniture design that revolutionizes the conventional concept of public seating through its distinctive fluid form and modular functionality. Created by Greek architect and designer George Drakakis, this sculptural bench employs a Drop & Forget installation concept that significantly minimizes setup costs while respecting existing urban infrastructure. The design features carefully balanced concrete curves that provide an embracing and ergonomic seating experience, crafted from reinforced cast stone with a minimum of 30kg/m3 galvanized steel B-500s reinforcement. The bench's surface undergoes acid etching treatment and waterproofing to ensure durability in outdoor conditions. With dimensions of 2870mm x 1120mm x 885mm for a single unit, the design allows for creative configurations through multiple unit arrangements, enabling two-unit compositions of 3580mm x 1120mm x 885mm and three-unit compositions of 3210mm x 3040mm x 885mm. The project, developed between December 2009 and June 2010, exemplifies the intersection of artistic expression and functional design, earning recognition with a Golden A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category for its innovative approach to urban furniture. The design's strength lies in its ability to combine robust construction with aesthetic appeal, while its modular nature allows for various spatial arrangements that can adapt to different urban contexts, demonstrating a sophisticated balance between form and function that challenges traditional perceptions of street furniture.
