Thankusir Neverland Restaurant

Thankusir Neverland Restaurant is an innovative architectural transformation project that exemplifies adaptive reuse in contemporary interior design, converting a former automotive repair workshop into a sophisticated dining establishment. Located in Shenyang, China, this remarkable renovation project, completed in 2018 under the creative direction of designer Bo Zhou, demonstrates exceptional spatial planning and thoughtful preservation of existing architectural elements. The design philosophy centers on celebrating the inherent beauty of the original structure, particularly maintaining the distinctive mottled walls that add character and historical depth to the space. A defining feature of the restaurant is its ingenious use of natural illumination through strategically placed skylights, creating dynamic interplay between light and shadow throughout the day. The multi-level space encompasses various functional areas, including a dining section with 3650mm ceiling height, a basement bar at 2550mm, and additional spaces in the wing building featuring mezzanine and second-floor heights of 2790mm and 2800mm respectively. The interior aesthetic is characterized by a harmonious blend of rustic materials, primarily wood and cement, which complement the preserved industrial elements. A notable architectural intervention includes the installation of a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit beneath the skylight, adorned with white clay pots, creating a striking visual focal point. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully addresses the challenge of working within budget constraints while creating interconnected spaces that allow seamless guest circulation between different areas without outdoor exposure. The project's success lies in its ability to maintain the authentic character of the original structure while introducing contemporary design elements that enhance functionality and aesthetic appeal.
