Shared Yard YardShared Yard YardShared Yard Yard is an innovative architectural project located in Zhangjiazhuang Village, Beijing, that exemplifies the successful modernization of rural architecture while preserving traditional cultural elements. This boutique homestay development, completed in 2019, represents a thoughtful approach to rural renovation, featuring four distinctive rooms designed to harmoniously integrate with the surrounding natural landscape of trees and vegetable fields. The project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional environmental consciousness through its innovative use of recycled materials from the village and strategic design elements that eliminate the need for artificial cooling systems. The architectural composition skillfully preserves and adapts an existing traditional northern Chinese dwelling, characterized by wooden window frames, brick walls, and tiled roofs, while seamlessly connecting it to contemporary structural additions. Spanning a site area of 763 square meters with a footprint of 258 square meters, the development incorporates sustainable features such as a sophisticated drainage system for rainwater harvesting and agricultural irrigation. The project's significance extends beyond its physical attributes, serving as a catalyst for rural economic transformation by introducing a new business model that bridges urban and rural lifestyles. Through its thoughtful design utilizing carbon steel plate, concrete, and white oak finishes, Shared Yard Yard creates a unique spatial experience that not only provides urbanites with an authentic rural experience but also elevates the local community's living standards and economic opportunities, while fostering a deeper appreciation of traditional northern Chinese cultural values.
