Reading Tea Teahouse

Reading Tea Teahouse is an innovative architectural and interior design project completed in 2019 in Chongqing, China, that masterfully reimagines traditional Chinese tea culture through contemporary design language. The 380-square-meter space represents a groundbreaking approach to teahouse design, where designer Ling Zhou successfully bridges traditional Chinese elements with modern architectural concepts. The project's most distinctive feature is its revolutionary treatment of wood, where traditional logs are precisely cut into 100mm wide and 5mm thick pieces, enabling the creation of fluid, curved architectural forms that maintain the material's natural character while achieving unprecedented spatial expressions. This sophisticated manipulation of materials extends to the integration of polished natural stone surfaces and bronze stainless steel elements, which replace conventional wooden components in Chinese window designs. The space employs a refined gray color palette complemented by natural wood textures and rustic floor tiles, creating an organic, contemporary aesthetic that respects traditional elements while pushing design boundaries. The teahouse's innovative approach to spatial organization creates multiple interconnected zones that maintain individual identity while forming a cohesive whole, demonstrating exceptional attention to both aesthetic and functional considerations. The project, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, exemplifies how contemporary design can preserve cultural heritage while advancing architectural innovation. The design successfully addresses the complex challenge of modernizing a traditional typology while maintaining its cultural essence, creating a space that serves both as a functional teahouse and as a testament to the evolution of Chinese design aesthetics.
