Samara Coffee TableSamara Coffee TableSamara Coffee Table is an innovative, multi-functional furniture piece designed by Jonathan Beldner that seamlessly combines aesthetic appeal with practical functionality. Drawing inspiration from the propeller-like shape of maple seed pods (samara), this sophisticated coffee table showcases the natural beauty of locally sourced Indiana hardwoods through its thoughtful construction in walnut and cherry wood. The table, measuring 1200 mm in width and 430 mm in height, features a distinctive design that incorporates removable lap desks, transforming from a static furniture piece into individual working or dining surfaces. The design employs advanced manufacturing techniques, utilizing CNC technology and cross-laminated timber construction in the legs to ensure structural integrity while maintaining its elegant form. The table's top surface features laser-engraved leaves that enhance the samara inspiration, creating a subtle yet meaningful connection to its natural muse. Developed between August and December 2018, the design successfully overcomes the engineering challenge of incorporating moving components while maintaining structural stability through the innovative application of cross-laminated timber technology, a recent advancement in construction methodology. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning piece in the Furniture Design category represents a harmonious blend of form and function, demonstrating excellence in material selection, craftsmanship, and innovative design thinking. The table's versatility allows it to serve multiple purposes, from a traditional coffee table for displaying books and beverages to a dynamic solution for modern living spaces where adaptable furniture is increasingly valuable.
