Hexi Corridor Grand Hotel is an exemplary architectural and interior design achievement that masterfully integrates modern design principles with traditional Chinese cultural elements, situated in the historic Dunhuang region. The 10,000-square-meter hotel complex, designed by Chimin Cheng and completed in 2018, showcases a sophisticated interpretation of local architectural heritage through its innovative entrance design, which features a striking combination of streamlined modern forms inspired by flying Apsaras frescoes and traditional arch-fighting elements. The hotel's spatial composition demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, incorporating elements from Dunhuang Grottoes through thoughtfully designed niches and structural features that create a rich yet refined atmosphere. The lobby presents a dramatic 10-meter-high space crowned with a blue sky ceiling design, while a centerpiece water feature utilizing Qilian Mountains dark jade embodies Zen philosophy. Notable design elements include the masterfully crafted flying Apsaras woodcarving at the service desk, enhanced by a dynamic steel wire mesh barrier that creates kinetic visual effects as guests move through the space. The interior employs a careful balance of grey cement brick blocks and wooden grille elements, creating sophisticated lighting effects that pay homage to the Crescent Lake's form. This harmonious blend of contemporary design with cultural heritage earned the project a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2020, recognizing its exceptional contribution to innovative spatial design and cultural preservation.
