Painted Skin Tattoo ShopPainted Skin Tattoo ShopPainted Skin Tattoo Shop is an award-winning interior design project that exemplifies the seamless fusion of traditional tattoo culture with contemporary spatial design, completed in 2019 in Chengdu, China. This 240-square-meter establishment represents a sophisticated interpretation of tattoo artistry through architectural expression, featuring a thoughtfully curated progression of spaces that begins with a mysterious curved corridor adorned with a steel mermaid sculpture illuminated by precise lighting. The interior design, conceived by Yalan Zheng and Shiyuan Zhang, masterfully incorporates neoclassical dark aesthetics with custom elements, including a meticulously handcrafted skeleton chandelier that required six months of dedicated craftsmanship. The space is distinguished by its rich retro styling, incorporating Corinthian Roman columns and Rococo-period elements that create an atmosphere of refined elegance, while Van Der Rohe-inspired furniture provides a contemporary counterpoint. The establishment includes specialized areas such as the Mirror Palace and the Cave, each designed to offer unique tattooing experiences while paying homage to the ancient origins of tattoo art. The project, which garnered the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional attention to detail through its elaborate wooden cabinetry, screens, and bar areas featuring intricate carved patterns that inject elements of luxury into the dark aesthetic. The design philosophy draws inspiration from both old school and new school tattoo traditions, acknowledging their shared roots in American interpretations of traditional and totem symbols, while creating a space that serves as a cultural bridge between ancient artistic practices and contemporary design sensibilities.
