Surely Art SpaceSurely Art SpaceSurely Art Space is an innovative architectural transformation project that reimagines a former garment factory into a multifunctional art and retail destination, exemplifying the successful fusion of historical industrial architecture with contemporary design sensibilities. Located in Hangzhou, China, this 10,763-square-foot space masterfully preserves the building's original character while creating a sophisticated environment for art exhibition, retail, and photography. The design philosophy centers on the temporal dialogue between past and present, utilizing the building's weathered walls as an integral design element that creates a compelling contrast with contemporary interventions. The space employs a minimalist approach to hard decorative elements, instead focusing on carefully curated soft furnishings and displays that enhance the natural ambiance. Materials including special paint, terrazzo, original solid wood, and ultra-white glass were thoughtfully selected to complement the existing industrial aesthetic while introducing modern refinement. The project, completed in 2019 under the direction of designer Michael Lam from Design Plus Design, demonstrates exceptional spatial planning that responds dynamically to natural light conditions, creating ever-changing shadow patterns that activate the interior environment. This innovative approach to adaptive reuse earned the project a Gold A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its outstanding contribution to contemporary spatial design. The space has become a significant cultural destination, attracting visitors with its unique atmosphere that bridges historical industrial architecture with contemporary art and retail functions.
