The Ancestor House HotelThe Ancestor House HotelThe Ancestor House Hotel is a meticulously renovated century-old Chinese courtyard dwelling transformed into a sophisticated hospitality venue, exemplifying the delicate balance between heritage preservation and contemporary adaptation in rural China. Originally constructed in 1898 as a family mansion, this architectural masterpiece spans 1,202 square meters and features a traditional three-hall structure with two wings and four internal courtyards, showcasing the distinctive Huizhou-style facade and roof architecture. The renovation project, led by architects Chen Xiao and Chen Dilong, prioritized the preservation of the original spatial layout while incorporating modern amenities and structural reinforcements. The property's restoration involved innovative solutions such as steel-concrete reinforcement of the traditional walls and the careful reconstruction of damaged timber frames, with original elements like stone plinths and select beams being preserved to maintain historical authenticity. The design philosophy embraces the principle of buildingless building, creating spaces that feel natural and unforced, as inspired by Lao Tzu's wisdom about formless beauty. The hotel features 14 thoughtfully designed rooms, connected by two courtyards that create varied circulation routes and visual experiences. Notable architectural interventions include the introduction of glass screen walls to enhance natural lighting while maintaining the structure's historical integrity. The interior design combines minimalist furniture with traditional elements, featuring local limestone flooring and wooden grills that create a harmonious blend of past and present. This project, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a significant achievement in rural architectural renovation and serves as a model for sustainable heritage adaptation in contemporary China.
