Chapel On The Hill Holiday CottageChapel On The Hill Holiday CottageChapel on the Hill Holiday cottage is a masterfully renovated 19th-century Methodist chapel transformed into a contemporary self-catering holiday accommodation in the picturesque North Pennines of England. The architectural conversion, completed in 2015, exemplifies exceptional adaptive reuse principles by preserving the building's historic Gothic elements while introducing modern amenities and sustainable features. The structure, which stood derelict for over four decades, has been thoughtfully restored to accommodate seven guests across its 141-square-meter floor plan, incorporating both ground-level and mezzanine spaces. The renovation project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to the original architectural character, maintaining the chapel's distinctive tall Gothic windows and main congregation hall while introducing contemporary design elements. The interior design harmoniously balances historical preservation with modern comfort, featuring exposed roof trusses with natural finishes and complementary tile work that accentuates the generous ceiling heights. The renovation process included comprehensive structural improvements, installation of modern utilities, and careful preservation of historic stonework, with recycled roof tiles maintaining authenticity. A particularly innovative solution was implemented in the mezzanine design, which was carefully positioned above the window line to preserve the Gothic apertures' integrity, with full-scale mockups ensuring optimal functionality despite height constraints. The building's sustainable renovation included comprehensive insulation and the installation of new wooden window frames that match the original aesthetic while improving energy efficiency.
