Utopia Womenswear CollectionUtopia Womenswear CollectionUtopia Womenswear Collection is a groundbreaking fashion design project that explores the intricate interplay between symmetry and asymmetry, drawing inspiration from underground music culture and personal narratives of self-acceptance. Created by fashion designer Yina Hwang and recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design category, this collection represents a profound artistic statement on beauty standards and self-expression. The collection features original prints and innovative fabric combinations, primarily utilizing PU leather, satin, power mesh, and spandex to create functional yet abstract garments that challenge conventional fashion norms. The design process began with an experimental approach, incorporating surgical tape to explore physical distortion, which subsequently influenced the development of unique collages and prints that defined the collection's distinctive silhouettes. Notable for its transformative elements, several pieces incorporate detachable fabric panels with snap closures, allowing wearers to modify and personalize their garments. The collection, which spans US sizes 2 to 6, emerged from a two-year development period between September 2018 and January 2020, culminating in its presentation at New York Fashion Week. The designer's Korean cultural background and personal journey of self-acceptance significantly influenced the collection's aesthetic direction, resulting in a harmonious blend of cultural commentary and contemporary fashion design. This work stands as a significant contribution to fashion design, particularly recognized for its innovative approach to material manipulation, original print development, and its powerful message of inclusivity and self-empowerment.
