AUM British Building Campus

AUM British Building Campus

AUM British Building Campus is a significant architectural restoration and rehabilitation project that transformed a 19th-century heritage building into a modern educational facility. The historic structure, characterized by its British Neo-Classical style and constructed using golden Globigerina Limestone and raw steel elements, underwent extensive renovation after suffering severe damage during World War II and subsequent neglect. The comprehensive rehabilitation project, designed by Edwin Mintoff and his team, successfully preserved the building's industrial character while adapting it for contemporary educational use. The campus encompasses 13 classrooms, 4 laboratories, a cafeteria, library, 18 offices, an internal garden, and two reception areas, thoughtfully integrated within the historic fabric. Standing 19.6 meters high, 194 meters wide, and 15.6 meters deep, the building showcases a deliberate contrast between original elements and contemporary interventions, with exposed services and preserved structural features such as voltini ceilings and riveted steel beams emphasizing its industrial heritage. The cafeteria space notably incorporates restored original machinery, creating a seamless blend of historical preservation and modern functionality. The project, which earned a Golden A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in sustainable architectural rehabilitation while maintaining cultural authenticity. The design approach prioritized the building's heritage status as a protagonist, implementing sensitive interventions that both preserve its historical significance and ensure its viability for future generations.
