The Armor Costume For A CharacterThe Armor Costume For A CharacterThe Armor Costume for a Character is a sophisticated theatrical costume design that reimagines traditional armor through a contemporary lens, specifically created for a modern interpretation of Shakespeare's Richard III. This innovative costume piece, designed by Samantha Chijona Garcia and Vladimir Cuenca, represents a masterful fusion of historical armor aesthetics with modern materials and techniques, earning recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Performing Arts, Stage, Style and Scenery Design category. The design consists of six distinct components: a metal-structured twill weave jerkin jacket featuring sewn metal lines, overlapping leather gaiters forming an independent structure secured with buckled straps, a chainmail glove, a velvet helmet lined with metal strips, black twill pants, and knee-high leather boots. The armor's construction demonstrates exceptional resourcefulness through the use of fully recycled materials, including repurposed corset bones and leather leggings, while maintaining the essence of traditional armor design. This piece uniquely reflects the duality of Richard III's character through its structural elements, with metallic corset nerves referencing classical Western armor and a butcher's chainmail glove symbolizing the character's ruthless nature. The modular design allows for dynamic stage interaction, enabling the actor to modify the costume's configuration throughout the performance, effectively supporting the character's evolution. The armor's dimensions (45cm x 30cm x 55cm for the main structure and a helmet measuring 57cm in diameter with 23cm height) were carefully calculated to ensure both dramatic impact and practical functionality for theatrical performance.
