Salon Xia SalonSalon Xia SalonSalon Xia Salon is an innovative interior design project that revolutionizes the traditional beauty salon layout through its distinctive architectural approach and spatial organization. Located in downtown Pasadena, California, this 144-square-meter establishment represents a significant advancement in modern salon design, featuring two freestanding hexagonal towers that create a unique radial arrangement of styling stations. The design, completed in 2018, demonstrates exceptional efficiency by reducing the required floor area per station by 23 percent while maintaining spacious individual workspaces for twelve stylists. The interior's aesthetic seamlessly integrates Southern Californian environmental influences with urban contextual elements, incorporating dark blue-greens reminiscent of coastal vegetation and terracotta oranges that reference Pasadena's architectural heritage. The space is characterized by its sophisticated material palette, including high-pressure laminate, quartz, and powder-coated steel, selected specifically for their durability against hair coloring agents. The design's innovative approach extends to its lighting solution, featuring linear fixtures that float as hexagonal halos around the station towers, providing essential shadow-free, neutral illumination for precise hair coloring services. The project's sculptural elements, including the reception desk, waiting bench, and central dressing room, all follow the hexagonal motif, creating a cohesive visual language throughout the space. This harmonious design earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its contribution to advancing salon design through its innovative spatial solutions and thoughtful integration of functional and aesthetic elements. The project successfully balances Japanese and Scandinavian design sensibilities while maintaining a strong connection to its local context, achieved through the careful selection of materials, colors, and architectural forms.
