Textile Art Center

Textile Art Center

Textile Art Center is a significant urban renewal and renovation project that transformed a historic blanket factory into a contemporary cultural space, embodying the rich textile heritage of Deqing County, China. This 2,000-square-meter facility, designed by Kris Lin and Jiayu Yang, represents a masterful integration of historical preservation and modern architectural innovation, completed in 2019. The design philosophy centers on respecting and reinterpreting the region's thousand-year textile tradition through contemporary design language. The space is ingeniously divided into two primary sections: a historical exhibition hall celebrating the local textile industry's legacy and a community art center serving as a dynamic hub for youth activities and learning. The architectural design maintains the original factory building's structural integrity while incorporating distinctive broken-line elements that seamlessly merge exterior and interior spaces. A particularly innovative feature is the implementation of LED light installations that symbolically represent yarn, creating a visual narrative that connects the space's industrial past with its artistic present. The reception area features light strips that follow the contours of the line-shaped roof, evoking the imagery of a textile machine and serving as a metaphorical bridge between historical memory and contemporary function. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category exemplifies successful adaptive reuse, combining preservation with modern functionality while maintaining cultural authenticity and promoting community engagement.
