Energola Side Shutter For PergolaEnergola Side Shutter For PergolaEnergola Side Shutter for Pergola is an innovative architectural component that combines solar energy harvesting capabilities with functional sun protection, specifically designed for pergolas, balconies, and glazed spaces. This multifunctional design, created by Jaroslaw Markowicz with team members Daniel Ziomek and Karol Cieślik, represents a significant advancement in Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) technology. The system features individual wings equipped with micro photovoltaic panels, each capable of independent movement and adjustment, allowing users to optimize both sun protection and energy generation simultaneously. The standard module, measuring 1000mm in width and 2200mm in height, is scalable to accommodate various architectural requirements. Constructed using extruded profiles with mounted solar panels, the design prioritizes both functionality and sustainability through its easily separable components for recycling. The system's lightweight yet robust construction overcomes the engineering challenge of incorporating electronics and photovoltaic panels while maintaining structural elegance. Operating through a remote control system, the shutter's wings can be adjusted to respond to changing environmental conditions and user preferences, powered entirely by its own solar energy generation. Any surplus energy produced can be redirected to the building's main power grid, contributing to overall energy efficiency. This innovative approach to sustainable architecture earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Building Materials and Construction Components Design category in 2020, acknowledging its contribution to advancing sustainable building solutions. The project, developed in Warsaw between September 2019 and January 2020, underwent extensive prototyping and testing phases to perfect its rotation system and structural integrity.
