UnBespoke Table Top ObjectUnBespoke Table Top ObjectUnBespoke Table Top Object is an innovative modular table accessory crafted from natural limestone, representing a sophisticated intersection of mathematics, design, and functionality. This contemporary design piece, created by designers Jeeyea Kim and Dorian Bybee, draws its conceptual foundation from the classical Haberdasher's Puzzle, a mathematical challenge that demonstrates how a square can be dissected and reconstructed into an equilateral triangle. The design consists of four precisely engineered triangulated stone pieces, each capable of holding tea light candles or small plants, measuring 230 mm in width and length, with a height of 50 mm. The versatility of the design allows users to arrange the pieces in various configurations, transitioning from square to triangular formations or experimental arrangements, showcasing the dynamic interplay between form and function. The implementation of Indiana limestone as the primary material pays homage to traditional architectural applications while reimagining its use in contemporary object design. The creation process involved advanced 3D modeling and precise CNC fabrication technology, overcoming the unique challenges of working with limestone at a smaller scale than typically encountered in architectural applications. This innovative approach to material application and geometric transformation earned the design a Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, recognizing its contribution to pushing the boundaries of contemporary design through the novel use of traditional materials. The project demonstrates a successful marriage of historical mathematical principles with modern fabrication techniques, resulting in a functional art piece that serves both decorative and practical purposes in contemporary living spaces.
