Motichair The Bar Chair is an innovative seating solution that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary design principles. Created by designers Koma Yang, Yuxiao Dong, and Jiaxin Liang, this distinctive bar chair, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, represents a significant departure from conventional chair structures through its innovative use of circular elements. The design draws inspiration from traditional Chinese architectural elements, particularly the moon gates and arches found in classical gardens, symbolizing unrestricted communication and fluid thought. Measuring 856mm x 485mm x 765mm, the chair employs carbon-fiber composite materials integrated with traditional mortise and tenon joinery techniques, complemented by full hidden dovetail joints that enhance structural stability. The chair's distinctive feature lies in its circular skeleton design, which effectively distributes forces while minimizing material usage. This innovative approach resulted from extensive research involving 200 volunteers from diverse demographics, leading to the optimization of ergonomic parameters and the careful calculation of ideal circle diameters for comfortable social interaction. The two-tone treatment and independent circular elements not only serve aesthetic purposes but also incorporate precisely measured invisible pedals positioned for optimal foot placement. Developed between December 2019 and February 2020, the chair successfully combines modern high-strength materials with traditional wood steam bending procedures, demonstrating a remarkable balance between aesthetic appeal, structural integrity, and functional comfort.
