Coastline Table

Coastline Table is an innovative furniture design that artistically addresses the critical issue of global warming through its unique aesthetic interpretation of coastal erosion caused by rising sea levels. Created by designer Yu-Han Wu, this conceptual piece combines functionality with environmental commentary, featuring a distinctive layered composition that metaphorically represents the transformation of coastlines due to climate change. The table's design ingeniously incorporates PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) for its top surface and employs michelia compressa and pine wood for its structural elements, measuring 350 mm in width, 650 mm in depth, and 500 mm in height. The transparent acrylic material symbolizes the encroaching sea, while the wooden elements represent the terrestrial landscape, creating a compelling visual narrative through the interplay of materials and light transmission. The manufacturing process involved significant technical challenges, particularly in the high-temperature heating required for shaping the liquid acrylic material, necessitating the careful selection of hardwood components to prevent deformation. The designer's meticulous attention to detail extended to the precise calibration of acrylic color gradients and transparency levels to achieve optimal visual impact. This thought-provoking piece, which garnered recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020, serves as both a functional table and a powerful artistic statement about environmental conservation, demonstrating how contemporary furniture design can effectively merge aesthetic appeal with social commentary.
