MareNostrum Residential BuildingMareNostrum Residential BuildingMareNostrum Residential Building is an innovative eight-story residential structure completed in 2019, whose design draws profound inspiration from classical Roman maritime heritage. The name, derived from Latin meaning Our Sea, reflects the building's conceptual foundation rooted in the historical Mediterranean context. The architectural design, conceived by Aaron Leppanen and Gabriela Anker, masterfully reinterprets the rhythmic movement of Roman fleet oars through its distinctive undulating façade, creating a dynamic visual experience that harmoniously merges historical reference with contemporary architectural innovation. The structure, encompassing 8,800 square meters across eight above-ground floors and three underground levels, features a sophisticated combination of conventional masonry blocks and mortar construction techniques. The building's most striking characteristic is its wave-inspired façade, which generates expansive balconies that seamlessly extend interior spaces outward, while incorporating passive sustainability strategies for natural lighting and ventilation. The innovative corner design, spanning two levels, creates intentional social interaction spaces between neighbors and provides essential shade protection from the intense Andean sun. The interior programming accommodates diverse residential needs through varied apartment configurations, including suites, two-bedroom units, three-bedroom apartments, and lofts, complemented by communal spaces such as a lounge and rooftop green areas. The lobby's design maintains architectural continuity through a unique combination of digital fabrication and artisanal craftsmanship, featuring CNC-cut MDF structures and hand-crafted Colorado wood panels. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category represents a remarkable achievement in combining historical inspiration, contemporary functionality, and sustainable design principles within an urban context.
