The Topics for the A' Advanced Design and Design Research Competition is as follows:
1. Advanced Design Core Topics (Design Research)
The Core topic discusses Design and Advanced Design itself. The aim is to develop the advanced design literature and fundamental definitions.
- Track 1.1. Advanced Design Research:
The following can be discussed for Design Research:
Design as a process of building the material merchandise, Design as a mediator, Design as a process of generating knowledge, Design as vision, Design as form, Design as a producer of tools, Design as a process in specific productive sectors.
- Requirements and guidelines for design research topics: For submissions into this track, your paper should have: 1. An Hypohesis i.e. a research statement of the problem or issue being explored which will be discussed. 2. Your paper should have a clear Methodology brief overview of research method used to address the research question identified in the thesis. 3. Your paper must present some Findings i.e. the main results of the study, derived from the methods used. 4. Finally your paper should end with Conclusions i.e. what these results mean for the field of study or for society and what future work could be done.
- Tips: Remember to include literature review, methodology, thesis, results, future work sections. Append data, the way the data was collected, and other information.
2. Applied Advanced Design Topics (Design Practice)
This topic focuses more on the application of Advanced Design in the form of Design Management, Design Strategy, and Research, the aim is to discover thinking patterns and base principles.
- Track 2.1. Applied Advanced Design:
The following can be discussed for Applied Advanced Design: Corporate Design Culture and Thinking, Design Management and Processes, Advanced Design Case Studies, Design Policy, Planning and Education, Design Research, Design Politics.
- Requirements and guidelines for design practice topics:
For submissions into this track, your paper should have: 1. A Framework from which the the scholarly knowledge base is developed upon. 2. Your paper should also provide a Summary of the Practical Application: try to state who, when, why, what, where questions regarding the undertaken design task. Documented Experience: What has been learned from the application or experiments, what were some opportunities, what were the challenges, identified outcomes etc. Conclusions i.e. what these results mean for the field of study or for society and what future work could be done.
- Tips: Remember to include framework definition, methodology, the experiement or application setting, time, location and other details that could be used to re-create the experience.
3. Advanced Design Multidisciplinary Topics (Design Theory, Research or Practice)
This topics discusses design’s role and vision in other fields and how design processes or tools are created, developed and integrated in such fields, the aim is to focus on the multidisciplinary role of design.
- Track 3.1. Humanities and Design
For Humanities and Design the following could be discussed in their relationship to design: History, Languages, Literature, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Religion and Visual Arts etc. For example: History of design.
- Track 3.2. Social Sciences and Design
For Social Sciences and Design: The following can be discussed; Design’s Role and Vision in: Anthropology, Archaeology, Area Studies, Cultural and Ethnic Studies, Economics, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Geography, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology and their relation to design.
- Track 3.3. Natural Sciences and Design
For Natural Sciences and Design, links and knowledge could be identified in Astronomy, Geology, Biology, Genetics, Ecology, Anatomy, Chemistry and Physics and their relation to design.
- Track 3.4. Formal Sciences and Design
For Formal Sciences and Design, the following knowledge domains could be explored for their role and relationship to design: Computer Sciences, Logic, Mathematics, Statistics and Systems Science and others.
- Track 3.5. Applied Sciences and Design
For Applied Sciences and Design, the Designs' Role in Agriculture, Architecture, Business, Divinity, Education, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Health Sciences, Journalism, Law, Library and Museum Studies, Public Administration and Transportation and their relation to design could be explored.
- Requirements and guidelines for design theory topics:
For submissions into one of the track above, your paper should have: Hypothesis of the issue being addressed, Literature Review i.e for example how this issue was priorly discussed, Findings and Contributions: how this ideas can help advancement of the field, implications for future and for the benefit of the design society.
- Tip: Remember to include biography or relevant research for any type of submission.
If your paper is more on Research or Practice, please refer to research topics and practice topics requirements and guidelines on tracks above.
4. Generic Topics (Design Theory, Research and Practice as well as Case Studies)
This topics discusses any new knowledge, practice, experience or research that relates to design, that could not be fit to other tracks. However, this is not a seperate session, and your paper will be included in one of the topics above for which the reviewers think it would fit more.
- Track 4.1. Ambigious / Undefined
This is a dummy track. Your entry will be assigned this track initially, however before it is published, it will be fit to one of the tracks mentioned above.
