The key feature of this project is the juxtaposition of two vintage French cabinets to custom-made sculptural steel pieces, bar/screen and a bookshelf. The intent was to create a visual tension between old and new, the warm aged wood with intricate intarsia of the cabinets and the industrial feel of the dark steel structures. The custom designed Harmonica Bar and Overhang, both screen and bar is the heart of the kitchen and a focal point of the entry zone of the apartment. The design concept is based on the current trends of upcycling and re-use of old furniture in a new setting.

Julian Piperov
Julian Piperov is an architect and interior designer with experience both in his native Bulgaria as well as a five year practice at Bonstra Architects - now Bonstra/Haresign Architects in Washington, DC. After his return back to Bulgaria he found studiopiperov in 2004 and his company managed to acquire a diverse portfolio of projects with both local and international clients. The main objective for all his projects is the quest for individual approach to spatial problems. His design philosophy is firmly grounded in the belief that a successful design requires sensitivity to the unique and contextual aspects of each project as well as good utilization of space.

Boris and Katya Israel
A family of four with an older son and a younger daughter. Their son - a teenager at the time of the design of the apartment got inspired by the design process and the final result and decided to study Architecture in the UK.
