Hane R., Mitsue G. M., Togo K., Yash B. Cady Smart Cane Handle
Cady Smart Cane Handle is Iron Design Award winner in 2019 - 2020 Differently Abled and Seniors' Assistance Design Award Category.
Cady Smart Cane Handle

Cady, a smart walking aid handle, helps people who have developed a fear of walking rebuild confidence in themselves and their walking aid. Using calm technology principles, Cady passes rhythmic vibrations through its body at a pace set by the user and their physical therapist. The device helps a user subconsciously maintain a consistent stride while they walk, minimizing the tendency to overthink steps, a primary reason for people with this fear to fall. Its innovative design maximizes functionality and ergonomics as a cane and destigmatizes the symbol of aging through a new chic aesthetic.

Hane, Mitsue, Togo, and Yash are four professionals who have returned to school to receive their master’s in design engineering degree at Harvard, a program housed in the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) and the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). They were brought together through their interest in addressing complex social challenges using innovative, interdisciplinary approaches using both human-centered and system-level means. Leveraging their varying professional backgrounds, from design and strategy to advertising and writing, the four students collaborated to address a deeply overlooked issue and population in the product and service design world. Brief profiles of the individual team members are listed below: Hane Roh is a UX designer bridging the physical and digital experience. View more of her work at www.haneroh.com. Mitsue Elisa Guerrero is a Mexican design strategist and impact designer. View more of her work at www.mitsuelisa.com. Togo Kida is a creative director and a creative technologist. Harvard University Master of Design Engineering

As a global society, we face complex challenges that demand innovative, multi-faceted solutions, which can only flow from work across diverse disciplines and scales to dissect, understand, and address the human and system elements. The Master in Design Engineering (MDE) program was collaboratively conceived and built by two schools—the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) and the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS)—to address these critical needs by training a new generation of innovators. The GSD has a long, distinguished history of producing the world’s best designers of buildings, landscapes, and urban environments, while SEAS has long cultivated excellence in engineering, foundational science, and innovation. The MDE program combines GSD methods of analysis, visualization, conceptual inquiry, and open-ended exploration with the rigor and quantitative power of the engineering disciplines at SEAS to address problems far beyond traditional design and engineering fields.
