Designer Interview

Interview with Christos Tsigaras at Tuesday 19th of August 2014

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
CT: Early in my life, I was observing objects around me, realizing that besides the construction, design is not just needed but there is a human being (designer) that can change with his vision the reality around us. This observation strengthen my curiosity to better understand design. I spend two years in parallel with the high school, reading and exploring industrial design. I was really fascinated by the fact that you can start drawing a line which can lead to a new object with unique utilities and beauty. After school, I started the real studies.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CT: I established my studio in 2012 when I realize that it’s time for me to make my real passion a profession. I never stopped designing during previous years. I worked till then for ISV architects as Construction manager and therefore I was able to experience and contribute in many works that our motto was : focus on construction details to highlight aesthetic.

FS: What is "design" for you?
CT: Design is the starting point of everything around us and means for me that through visionary design I can offer better life to the people

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
CT: I love 1st to create the full work from the initial idea to the last detail before construction and 2nd to design the project prototypes

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
CT: My 1st two objects were an ICM- commercial refrigerator and a wastebasket for Sigma Design

FS: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
CT: 28/11-02/12/2013 Greek design – Good design Helexpo palace Athens

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
CT: My inspiration comes from real life around me. What I touch, see and feel makes me a designer

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
CT: Simplicity in life and objects drives my style in design

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
CT: I am lucky enough to live in Athens, Greece in a neighborhood with a real proximity to the historical center. You can see Acropolis from almost every street. It is certainly a real asset for me that my country’ heritage is a synonymous to arts and aesthetic since ever, although for us that we are designers the difficulties are many especially now that the financial crisis rules the professional opportunities

FS: How do you work with companies?
CT: As an independence external partner

FS: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
CT: A designer can be characterized as good through his real works, so companies can just review his personal design portfolio looking for innovation and fresh ideas that serves real people and community needs

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
CT: Less is more

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
CT: Le Corbusier views perfectly expresses my believes, He is known for his contribution to contemporary international architecture and he wasfocused on design that brings harmony and proportion. He believed in the mathematical order of the universe and therefor he was closely connected with the golden ratio and the Fibonacci series, which he described as "rhythms apparent to the naked eye and clear in their relations with one another”
These rhythms are at the root for human activities and creates a core inevitability, the same inevitability that causes the observation of the Golden Section by children, adults or seniors, savages or highly educated people

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
CT: I will start producing design ideas that I have already created

FS: How can people contact you?
CT: tsigarasdesign@gmail.com
