Designer Interview

Interview with B a r b a r a Schneider at Saturday 3rd of July 2021

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
BARBARAS:
I am a freelance designer, illustrator, and multiple-disciplinary visual artist.
My main interests are art & design, toys, children´s literature, fashion & textiles. I am always interested in new collaborations and art & design projects and to "join a dream team".
B a r b a r a Schneider @artavita.com

FS: What is "design" for you?
BARBARAS: A short reply: "Design"- a quality product with a certain purpose and function, which improves our way of living - modern world - and state of art.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
BARBARAS: Cooking gloves! Actually, there was a call for designs, published on the blackboard of the University. I realized my ideas and submitted my designs: a serial of "animals", http://bit.ly/2f13oaP. A few weeks later, I received a message from the company that I was the only participant and that they cannot give me a prize, but they DO like the designs and they would like to buy the animal collection: My first sale was made. Unfortunately, no production, but licensing and production are still possible.
In 1988, I made some illustrations for Golfino Moden as a freelancer (briefing) and created some illustrations for their knitwear design collection.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
BARBARAS: ... paper, textiles, wood, new and alternatives materials, and other materials, photography, passion for printing, ........

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
BARBARAS: peaceful & comfortable environment

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
BARBARAS: Happiness!
A suitable quotation is: "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Confucius

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
BARBARAS: More happiness and of course more pleasure to continue designing.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
BARBARAS: Summarized: Enriching our way of living and state of art with "wonderful objects and concepts", cultivating and spreading humanity/ human rights ( i.e.: healthy and no harmful products, no child labor), and saving our planet as much as possible.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
BARBARAS: Some catchwords: new technologies and in contrast more cultivation or integration of traditional things/products and materials and the environment: new ideas to save our planet and enrich our lives, more up-cycling than recycling, objects with multiple functions, more comfort, simplicity/ minimalism, entertainment, communication and education, smaller and lighter objects ...

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
BARBARAS: Subjects: Discussion of our modern life, daily life, literature, history of art and design, humanity, and recycling-upcycling.
Source of inspiration: imagination, own experiences, own art/design/photographs, studies, "lack of satisfaction"/ desire, traveling & research, music, and more

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
BARBARAS: Contemporary and abstract art.
Modern design.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
BARBARAS: In general, the cultural heritage of Germany is interesting, thinking of art, craft, design, and architecture. It was a pleasure to discuss the Bavarian culture to create "My Travel Guide Munich" and it would be also a joyful challenge to discuss further “cultures & cities”. Nevertheless, I preferred/prefer to work & live "abroad".
Freedom of Art is very important.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
BARBARAS: Some suggestions are: "forcing" own creativity daily, discussion of the history of art and/ or design, cultivating kind of sketchbooks, questioning the state of living, etc.

FS: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
BARBARAS: It is a great pleasure and a wonderful passion and challenge.
Opportunity to work internationally and worldwide.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
BARBARAS: Necessity: freedom of art and design, imagination, passion, confidence, curiosity, research, purpose, good concept, functionality, humanity, eco-friendly as much as possible.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
BARBARAS: Imagination, good sketching/drawing skills, 3D visual thinking abilities, knowledge of / interest in materials and technologies, good communication skills (presenting design, collaboration with a team or certain specialists).

FS: Who are some of your clients?
BARBARAS: Michigan Hospital/Gifts of Art Project, Manville Arts Council, Carol Simon Levin, Women’s Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal, The Drum Literary Magazine, VIVA TV GmbH, Boltze Bazar GmbH & Co., Twelve Stars Communication Ltd., Triangle, J. A. Halbritter, Grosselfinger & Partner, Golfino AG, Zuhause, F.A.Z./ Golf International, Kirstein GmbH, Kulturforum Alte Post Neuss,

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
BARBARAS: Creating good quality designs like art 4 kids/ toys and fashion, art and other products, continuing to enrich knowledge and skills, joining a dream team and/or new creative collaborations, moving to a good/ better place.....

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
BARBARAS: Own independent art & design projects, independent Limited Editions (art/design- production), sales, participation of diverse art & design projects.

FS: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
BARBARAS: Ongoing independent project: A Coloring book!
