Interview with Georgiana Ghit at Tuesday 5th of May 2020 FS: Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator? GG: My vision in design studies is different but in a good way. Since I was a little girl I was interested in painting and drawing. I studied art and architecture in high school. I graduated National University of Arts and Design in Bucharest, Romania. I activated in digital art, graphic design and my favorite: product design. During the years I understood that every cross road was with the purpose to grow myself into industry and to educate others too. Also, I thanks my parents for supporting me in every decision I made. FS: How did you become a designer? GG: I studied creative fields since I was little. The design thinking process became part of me, probably this is one of many other reasons. Why design? Because design made me who I am today. The thinking process and the experiments learned me to focus more on the details and on people needs. My life is changed during the process because I always learn that my concepts have a cause behind the story. FS: What are your priorities, technique and style when designing? GG: Why, what, how? I think it's important to make baby-steps, to take challenges for your products and to think about the context. My priority is to have at the final, a real functional product and with the hope to match perfectly the sustainable area. FS: Which emotions do you feel when designing? GG: I feel free. I can be myself and this is way to important for me. I think every projects let me to create a better path for the future work. My inspiration many times comes from nature. Also from society problems, from my daily routine and from the people who I work with. For exemple, it is interesting how people react in different situations or places. Body language is very important for the empathy design process. FS: What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer? GG: Art, I'm preoccupied with the sustainable category, the recycled materials but also with the innovations. I like to have a real story in every project. I would love to focus on social, environment design category. FS: What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project? GG: Right now I'm working on my online store. I will focus on the business, and then I will start making new projects. I dreamed always to have my own line products design and I'm working on my dream. Probably next year I will have my very own workshop where I will put all the energy to create good and eco friendly products. I'd like to change the perspective of the world. FS: What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career? GG: I know life is hard, but don't give up and work hard. The succes will follow. Failure is not a crime, is the perfection of the achievement. Everyday's learning. The discipline and nature matter. FS: You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects? GG: I am a young designer, but I think I can answer that. Best advice is that you never need to give up on your dreams. Work not hard but smart. Be a good designer and change the world. So, don't be afraid of failure. When you experiment you will find the right answer. FS: What is your day to day look like? GG: Every day is different. A great day starts with one cup of coffee. A perfect day is finished with new ideas. Even if it's hard at the beginning of the career, I focus on people's need and try to create the unexpected products. FS: How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter? GG: I use Design thinking methodology for every project. I think this is the best way for me to analize each route and find the best solutions for my concept and for my target. Not sure how to describe the style but it is a minimalist daily routine process. I do stay in trend, but I actually believe that the product can make the trend flow. FS: How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design? GG: A good design is a product that serves well by meeting the functional and fundamental needs with reliability. Also, I'd like to analyse the experience of the customer. Good insight, simple vision and great functions. Less means more, that's why is so complicated to deliver something successful 100%. But you keep trying to improve it until you feel that it's enough. A really good design is dedicated to people. A really great design stands out. I evaluate a good design in terms of the 3 needs: simple, functional, aesthetic. FS: How do you decide if your design is ready? GG: The final touch. No, the design can't be complete. There will be always a way to improve my design or other. Every designer probably will answer the same way. There so much energy for making a product that you never know when to stop. But I stop, because I need to follow my way. The decision depends on the product or on what you feel about it. You will know, when it's ready to go. In theory: good function, simple, aesthetic, ecofriendly and strong. FS: What is your biggest design work? GG: The next work, every time. I do not believe in one single best product. I believe in multiple good products. But, I am proud of my last one, Fragrance Lamp, because I think will change the idea of what you could have in your home. FS: Who is your favourite designer? GG: My favourite designers* are great legends, like: Zahah Hadid, Le corbusier, Dieter Rams, Mies van der Rohe. I strongly believe that Zahah Hadid was and still is a great woman arhitect and designer. Karim Rashid is not afraid of colors so I find it atractive, he has a personal way. I also studied Bauhaus and probably i would love to had the chance to talk with the founders. The most iconic I must say, Charles and Ray Eames, they found each other and changed the world together. FS: Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture? GG: The music is part of my daily creative process. I listen music not always but often. Not sure if my culture inspiring my object but for sure it's inspiring my way of thinking sometimes. Right now, I'm working on my future online product shop. Design is a lifestyle, it learned me to organize myself, to live simple, to hope, I find it peacefully FS: Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy? GG: The challanges are making me do my best even if I have deadlines. I'm used to work alone but I don't mind to have brainstorming debates or working in teams. I like honesty, so for me this is an important detail when hiring somebody or when I'm working with somebody. My responsibilities: people's needs. Weather change the style. People's behavior can change the process. Sometimes is difficult to satisfy everybody's expectation. Sometimes we work hard until we gain the great results. Sometimes you are wondering if this is the right path for you. But at the end of the day, you are happy, because you can create something good for the planet and people and they know it. Because you are the designer. FS: What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect? GG: The materials used. The unique aesthetic shapes. Safe design ideas. I'm preoccupied with the sustainable category, the recycled materials but also with the innovations. I like to have a real story in every project. I would love to focus on social, environment design category. So, for the trust in my ideas, I give back: eco friendly products and educate the industry about sustainability. I would love to own a gallery art, a space where all the young artist can expose their art for free, and to have te posibility to sell their creations. I also have an idea for social design. I love kids so maybe a smart creative hub for everybody, including the families with financiar problems. Maybe I dream about an utopian way, but I hope that I will have the chance to help others with my creations and my initiatives. FS: What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award? GG: Recognition, Experience and Trust. Every design competition is important because you learn and grow after every experience. The result not matter more than the experience and the courage of participation.
