Interview with Saara Korppi at Sunday 17th of May 2020 FS: Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator? SK: I have blown glass since 2007 and educated as a Glassblower Artisan in 2013. After that I have studied two years in Sweden and had other specific glassblowing education from USA and Italy. Since I started, I have made my own design. FS: How did you become a designer? SK: I started to design my glass design since I educated as a glassblower. I have always had an inner desire to create things with my hands and design my own things. I wanted a more practical approach for designing and so I educated as a glassblower. I started to design my glass design since I started to educate as a glassblower. Learning new things has given me new approaches to design and better design. FS: What are your priorities, technique and style when designing? SK: Functionality, usage, looks First my approach would be thinking and then sketching it. I make first models and then finalize the product final shape. FS: Which emotions do you feel when designing? SK: Excitement, joy and all emotions between. Making it is most exciting. I like most of glassblowing. FS: What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer? SK: When I was a young, I did had painting and drawing courses. It helped me later to see things more on three dimensional. FS: What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project? SK: Dream big and make big things true FS: What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career? SK: Believe in yourself FS: You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects? SK: Believe in yourself FS: What is your day to day look like? SK: First planning and i have different day themes FS: How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter? SK: I would like think about that I make the trends FS: How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design? SK: functionality and aesthetic FS: How do you decide if your design is ready? SK: When it feels right technically and emotionally FS: What is your biggest design work? SK: The 30s Cognac Glass and the 30s Wine Glass because both have won the Silver Award FS: Who is your favourite designer? SK: Tapio Wirkkala FS: Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture? SK: My country has beautiful nature and it inspires me. FS: Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy? SK: I work mostly solo, but some really complicated works need working partner in the working process. FS: What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect? SK: I think it is great to involve these kind of things. FS: What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award? SK: Recognition, PR, Award
