Interview with Joyce C. Li

Home > Designer Interviews > Joyce C. Li

Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Joyce C. Li (JCL) for A’ Design Award and Competition. You can access the full profile of Joyce C. Li by clicking here.

Interview with Joyce C. Li at Tuesday 30th of March 2021

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
JCL: Since young, I've noticed that through imageries is how I absorb information, express, and communicate. I always showed more interest in curriculums that are free-formed and are not confined by rules or answers. I applied for a BFA fashion design major at the prestigious design school, Parsons the School of Design to see how I adapt to a creative environment. After 4 intensive years to learn about myself through the lenses of art and design, I saw how persistent and patient I am with the process of creating a collection. It was unlike my normal self and that is when I realized I truly wanted to be a designer.

FS: What is "design" for you?
JCL: It is a language. It's my voice.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
JCL: Even though my background is in fashion design, I don't like to limit myself to only express myself through the medium of garments/ fabrics. I believe all creative fields are correlated with one another. I often find my inspiration from architecture, pottery, or industrial design pieces. So when I am designing a fashion collection inspired by other art forms, I'd like to think I am not only designing a collection of clothes, but I am also designing structures, objects, lifestyle...etc.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
JCL: When I visit museums, art galleries or reading about other designers' works in book, magazines or an interview.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
JCL: Silhouettes and structures.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
JCL: I feel intrigued, inspired, and challenged when I design. It is a mixed emotion that changes at different stages throughout my design process.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
JCL: A release of anxiety and critical evaluation from myself, and followed by fulfillment.

FS: What makes a design successful?
JCL: I think a successful design should build on universal, or relatable concerns/ emotions. It should trigger the audience to pause, respond and think.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
JCL: I consider whether the concept/ objective behind the design is fulfilled.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
