PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Lift assist walker

INSPIRATION:
The worldwide verified increasing of impairments and reduced functional abilities population also highlights diversity regarding physiological, functional and personal features among this group. Some walker users struggle performing standing up and sitting movements. In the absence of proper assistive aids or available caregivers, these people usually have to use wheelchairs. Shift was designed to meet this demand and avoid early, avoidable and health deteriorative use of wheelchairs.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Shift is a walker designed not just to provide gait assistance, but to enhance postural transition maneuvers. The improvement on the transfer maneuver is due to the products structural features: an extra handlebar and the posterior feet design, which provide a more stable, ergonomic and secure lift movement. It brings a perspective shift from a medical device to a fashionable and customizable accessory, within low tech processes and cost, making affordable to highlight user’s identity.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Lower handlebar positioned closer to the user’s body gravity center and the feet designed to get under seats, makes easier and safer to stand and to sit maneuvers. 3 points assist gait: the comfortable upper handlebar, angle of 15 degrees from the floor; the centered transverse bar, helps to climb stairs/ramps; and the lower handlebar, is used to descend stairs/ramps. For transportation and storage, user or caregiver makes two movements, folding each handle into the middle of the equipment.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Shift’s design project was started on February 2017th, at Industrial Design Division, National Institute of Technology, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was conducted in a partnership with professionals from Mangueira Olympic Village, in Rio’s community, and Pestalozzi Association, from Niteroi City.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The product was designed to be built in manufacturing processes similar to those of conventional walkers, which includes cutting, bending, welding metals, and painting in various colors. Its manufacture includes bonding bamboo to metal tubes, with of vegetable origin and non-toxic resin. The handle grip uses leather or similar material. The foot tips are made of vulcanized rubber.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research was conducted to identify the demand of rehab professionals and walker users. Results showed difficulties on sit and stand maneuvers. References revealed that current walker projects use electronic and robotic systems to fulfill this issue. The briefing was to design a less complex and and cheaper solution. Biomechanical test of postural transition showed some gain of Shift prototype, compared to the standard walker.

CHALLENGE:
Research challenge was that some institutes of rehab contacted for partnership didn’t answer, which is an usual and protective posture, since some elderly and disabled people may be vulnerable to ethical issues. Technical challenges were to address: sit-to-stand assistance; foldability; materials and shapes that may evoke please sensations, yet maintaining weight, support aid and production costs requirements.

Its performance is focused on energy, industrial health complex, oil and gas, defense, renewable energy, green chemistry and social technologies. An important result INT achieved has been in the area of social development, with transfer of assistive technologies and social inclusion. Among recent projects are: the Braille Electronic Wall, aimed at the social inclusion of the visually and hearing impaired; pedagogical objects to facilitate the learning of students with disabilities such as autism; and the development of wheelchairs.
