DESIGN NAME: Day Job
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Illustrated book
INSPIRATION: I created this book while studying towards my Honors in Illustration (BA in Ill) in 2017 and thought about the concept of a day job. Being a creative, people encourage you to have a normal day job, to pay the bills, and then to be creative at night when you come home from work. This concept fascinated me and I thought what if your day job was just as exciting as being creative. I chose six professions and thought of how that job could be exciting in an abstract, humorous way.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a illustrated book, written, illustrated and hand bound by Lené Ehlers. It consists of 28 pages. The content revolves around so called ordinary day jobs, being an architect or a plastic surgeon to name two, and recreating aspects of that job in a witty and tongue- and- cheek manner. Visually, the executing of the illustrations are unique, in a graphic style and colour is used economically. Gouche, ink, acrylic paint, colored pencil and collage were used to create the illustrations.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This book is designed for the audience to see the humor in the serious topic of having a day job. Most people will relate to the message of the book because the chances are big they have found themselves in a similar situation: having a boring day job.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2016 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and finished in January 2017, in Stellenbosch.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Qualitative research techniques were used for this project. The objective was to find a relevant issue to address in the form of a children's book. Children are encouraged to pursue high paying jobs, like becoming a doctor or an architect. This book aims to give a humorous insight into these jobs, encouraging children to imagine what different jobs would be like. This book has the potential to effect how a child sees a profession and how he will choose one for himself one day.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part was to give a creative spin on seemingly ordinary day jobs, but this was also the part I enjoyed the most and being the most satisfying because it challenged me.
