DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Blue Accessibility Chair

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Accessibility Chair

INSPIRATION:
At 15 years of age and with perfect health, Vitor suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and saw his life transformed overnight. He has lost his speech and body movements, caused by a spastic tetraplegia. With much support and an immense desire to live, he has been gradually rehabilitating and has found in sports, which he always enjoyed practicing, the pleasure, the stimulation and the strength to overcome the numerous obstacles. He chose Stand Up Paddle Boarding, as the sport that he could practice.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The accessibility SUP chair has been designed to meet the needs not only of people with reduced mobility but of anyone who wants to enjoy the benefits of the sport, with safety and mobility. The materials used in stainless steel and the rounded shapes of the structure were designed to eliminate any risk of injury. Its telescopic supports provide adjustments and greater accessibility and support for the torso, legs, feet and head. A system of button clips, allows for its quick release.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The main concept is to bring inclusion to one of the fastest growing sports in the world, even though it may not serve all people. Designed to be lightweight and foldable, using stainless steel tubular structures (316l) and hinges at strategic points, it allows easy transport, maintenance and storage. Also due to a good combination of mechanical properties, of corrosion and fusion, it allows for the acquisition of complex geometric parts. The system has dual function and when coupled with special rubber wheels, it becomes versatile and amphibious, easily moving on any type of ground, especially in beach sand. It allows the user to be transported without the need of a traditional wheelchair; in addition, it also enables its use in the water or as a comfortable sun lounger.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2017 and finished in November 2017 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Main structure (backrest, seat and legs) in welded stainless steel tube (316l) diameter 19.05mm, extremely resistant to salt water, giving the whole a longer life. A telescopic system for adjusting the legs in diameter 22.22mm tube, allows its adjustment and adjustments through button clips to meet the various deficiencies. It has quick release joints, strategically located, which allows its folding considerably reducing its size and allowing its assembly and disassembly in a few movements. Through an axle at the base of the seat, it allows for the placement of special rubber wheels, making the kit amphibious and enabling travel on complex terrain.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Un-folding size: width 1030/1130mm x Depth 630mm x height 860mm Folded size: width 1000mm x Depth 630mm x height 350mm. The dimensions of the package (when chair is folded) 670mm x 1040mm x 370mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Currently, we see a growth in the practice of this sport, but for people with little or no mobility, it is still limited. Some people make adaptations with their own wheelchairs or even with other homemade solutions, by utilising unsafe and precarious methods, for undertaking this activity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people with some type of disability will increase considerably due to population growth, advances in medicine and the aging process. In countries where life expectancy is over 70 years, each individual will live with an average disability of 8 years, i.e. 11.5 percentage of their existence.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part of the project was finding a company that could execute the project correctly and at a low cost. The issue of inclusion of people with special needs in all levels of society is still very incipient in Brazil. Even with a suppressed demand and waiting for projects in this sector. Throughout history, people with disabilities were seen as a burden to families, companies and societies, making them invisible. It is not an insignificant minority, as 10 percentage of the world’s population has some type of disability. Nonetheless, it is a group that has historically been ignored by politicians and neglected by society. Inclusion no longer became necessary but a prerequisite. This is a path with no return. Therefore, we believe in the importance of motivating and inspiring anyone in any condition, to go out, practice sports, have fun...
