PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Custom-braided cables

INSPIRATION:
A couple of years ago I was co-founder of a start-up working on electric guitars. There were always plenty of guitar and amplifier cables lying around everywhere, which was part of the game. However, the dozens of computer and electricity cables on top and underneath our desks were a nuisance! At some point it struck me that if we can't hide them, we need to find another way to deal with them. Knot*Knot became the solution to the problem! The cables now want and need to be seen...

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Put your cords on the table! The Berlin-based design label Knot*Knot offers a wide range of fancy cable products including computer-, speaker and lighting cables, extension cords and multi-plug connectors. Each item gets hand-braided with colourful high quality ropes, making the results both fresh and fashionable. Thanks to Knot*Knot, formerly dull wires now become a bold design statement.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Cable management is something that every single company and even every single private person somehow has to deal with. You can choose to leave the cables unorganized or you can try to structure them by using rather unaesthetic cable racks or cable binders. However, Knot*Knot offers a completely new approach: by braiding colourful ropes around the cables, they become an eye-catcher, cable brack can be avoided and the cables don't interloop to annoying clusters anymore. Also, every single knot of the braiding can be used as strain relief.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Berlin in 2011 with the Knot*Knot online cable configurator, which is still running to this day. In 2014, the first two Knot*Knot DIY books were published, followed by another one in 2015. In 2015 a paracord brand called Knot*Knot Supreme Paracord was established in collaboration with paracord wholesales company Tactical Trim. Since 2015 to this day, Knot*Knot is equipping the newly designed concept stores of mobile provider O2 with braided cables all across Germany.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
All cables offered via the Knot*Knot online cable configurator are certified goods for resale that have the seals of approval relevant ot electric cables. The braiding around the cables is handmade with ropes made of either 100% PE or 100% PP. The braiding itself does not have any influence on the cables regarding mechanical and/or thermal issues.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Products in Knot*Knot online cable configurator: extension cords, multiple connectors, lead cords, rubber connectors, speaker cables and lighting cables. Product lengths ranging from 0,8 up to 10 metres.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
When the idea of braided cables occured to us, the first design approach was to braid the cables themselves, e.g. to turn them into multiple connectors. However, the first samples turned out to be rather unsatisfying, since the cables were to stiff to be braided properly. Thus we needed to come up with a different solution and finally went for ropes to be braided around the cables. Several different types of ropes and knotting techniques were tested until the right materials and the right techniques were found.

CHALLENGE:
To make the products more marketable, we needed to find a way to mass customize them. Therefore, we created an online cable configurator, where within a couple of mouse clicks, every user can generate and order his personal desired cable. The configurator holds more than 2.500 potential product variations. The next challenge was to set up the local braiding workshop for the production process to run on high efficency throughout all worksteps. Orders are usually shipped within one workday.
