DESIGN NAME: Collector Vacuum
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Robot vacuum cleaner
INSPIRATION: Although the typical robot vacuum was welcomed at first, it has revealed its demerits, cannot absorbing large trashes. With change in its shape and process of new vacuum design, we found potential possibility of effective vacuum without adding any other components.
'Collector Vacuum' suggests a new way of cleaning, uses dead space as a recharging nest for itself and a trash can, and collects trashes in a batch, which could minimize users inconvenience and enhance its function.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 'Collector Vacuum', has a new concept of collecting trashes by shifting that of absorbing trashes, has overcome the demerit of typical one through form changes. It normally stays in the hole of wall, cleans smartly by understanding structure of house, and returns to its shelter, with trashes under its body. People can check the trashes through wall screen, and if the user swipe down the screen, the floor of the shelter opens letting trashes into the apartment’s common dumping ground.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: ‘Collector Vacuum’ offers new-fashioned user experience. In these days, cleaning room could be considered as a role of machine, not human being. Therefore, keeping pace with smart/automating trend, the vacuum moves around the house smartly and trashes fall into the common dumping ground of the apartment automatically after user checks the collected trashes and swipes down the screen on the wall.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2016 in Torino and finished in January 2017 in Seoul

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For better function of robot vacuum, ‘Collector Vacuum’ has just changed its exterior shape, which is effective in manufacturing process. Square body with rounded corners has empty space in reversed ‘U’ shape in the bottom to carry trashes. It is a best form of vacuum which can fit its concept, vacuuming and collecting trashes simultaneously. Other factors considered were charging and keeping trashes when it is
placed in its nest. It could offer unawkward and familiar user experience, satisfying all these requirements. In addition, various apartment brands may have better perception through putting ‘Collector Vacuum’.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Ethically, categories which robot can replace that of human shouldn’t infringe human productive activities. In this perspective, cleaning could be substituted by high-performancing robots. However, negative aspects can be caused by users about these decreased process.
To indicate various stances, we we utilize 'Google Survey' actively.
We interviewed user, and through these process, the idea that making cleaning processes simple have been made sense.
CHALLENGE: The core of vacuum is composed of vacuum fan, brush, and dust box. Our design should not only include those components, but also enhance the function of robot vacuum cleaner. With change in its shape and process of new vacuum design, we found potential possibility of effective vacuum without adding any other unnecessities. 'Collector Vacuum' suggests a new way of cleaning, uses dead space as a recharging nest for itself and a trash can, and collects trashes in a batch, which could minimize users inconvenience and enhance its function.
