DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Veboo

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Wearable smart device

INSPIRATION:
Veboo is based on a special tool (named SzeTi) made for visually impaired people. My aim was to improve this tool according to the claims of the potential users and to extend the user group using the Design for All concept which intends to make the product accessible for everyone. I conducted empirical research with special users and rehabilitation specialists about the SzeTi. This involved personal and focus group interviews, filling out questionnaires, and usability testing with blind people.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Veboo is a concept of a wearable mobilephone complementary smart device mainly made for costumers with disabilities to help them with their everyday life. My aim was to make the product accessible for everyone. The tool is tailored to transmit diverse information that can be decoded by different sense organs (visible, audible and tactile). It is equipped with a capacitive touchscreen but it also can be operated by buttons and can be used by both left-handed and right-handed people.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Veboo can be worn on the wrist or as a necklace. Beside the visual information, audible and tactile information is also available. It can be operated by a capacitive touchscreen or by buttons and can be used by both left-handed and right-handed people. The buttons on the interface are hard-contrast, embossed and well-separated from each other. The pictograms are straightforward. The button on the band makes it easier to fasten the strap with mouth for users with hand injuries.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2015 in Budapest and finished in June 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The touchscreen of the product is an OLED display which works without background lighting and it has got several advantages such as displaying black colour with lower brightness so the deeper black colour strengthen the contrast. To protect the display, I included a Gorilla Glass film which is more flexible than its usual Sapphire rivals. I integrated a lithium-polymer battery into my product. The product and the strap are from polyurethane and the button on the band is from stainless steel.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The dimensions of the device: 35 mm x 10 mm x 45 mm The dimensions of the strap: 20 mm x 2 mm x 245 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I conducted empirical research with special users and rehabilitation specialists about the SzeTi. This involved numerous personal and focus group interviews, filling out questionnaires, and also usability testing with blind people. The aim was to improve the SzeTi according to the claims of the potential users and also to extend the user group using the Design for All concept which intends to make the product accessible for everyone.

CHALLENGE:
During the development, I wanted to take all relevant factors into account refer to the design, especially the sizes, colors and usability. One of the challenges was to fit the anthropometric data and the dimensions of the technical components while utilizing the needs and ideas of the potential users. It was also a challenge to organize the whole research process and conduct the focus group and personal interviews, as well as the usability testings with the potential users.
