| DESIGN NAME: Egg of Concrete PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair INSPIRATION: The Egg Chair of Concrete draws inspiration from iconic Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen. It is a reinterpretation of the classic designs of the modernist era with a contemporary twist. The idea is not to offer an escape from a modern jungle of a city, on the contrary, I proclaim the acceptance of urban surroundings and transform industrial materials into a comfort and cozy object. Concrete and rebar traditionally work together, but here they work in a different way. What seems to be cold and brutal can supply a safety space for relaxing and gives unexpected feeling of comfort. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Constructed with concrete, rebar and metal plates the concrete chair’s composition brings to light the unique qualities of industrial materials and repurposes the raw materials to create a comfort chair. The neutral color of the chair also makes this a versatile option for a wide variety of interior styles and projects. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The concrete is molded into the "womb" shape, it inspires very different feelings in different people. It absorbs a body providing a stable structure to rest upon. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project took five months from concept to realization. Designing of the Egg Chair of Concrete began in January 2015 and the fabrication of the chair was finished in March 2015 to present the product at Design Living Tendency Exhibition which were held in Kyiv, Ukraine. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product combines concrete, rusted rebar and metal plates. Like a sculptor, Jacobsen first sculpted the Egg out of clay in his garage so he could perfect the shape. I created my first Egg Chair of Concrete with my own hands having tried to reinterpret its unique shape with concrete. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: DIMENSIONS H: 1450 x W: 830 x D: 800 mm, weight - 35 kg TAGS: Egg Chair of Concrete, Solmaz Primavera, Concrete Chair, Egg Chair RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research was centered around the possibility to make the concrete chair lighter and change the perception of industrial materials in our everyday life. CHALLENGE: Despite the use of unconventional materials, the concrete chair has an incredibly ergonomic and comfortable seat. While it's true that a piece of furniture cast of traditional normal-weight concrete can be pretty heavy, it was a challenge for me to reduce the weight. She is a graduate of The Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture and the owner of Persian Primavera studio and Solmaz Primavera brand. Reinterpretation of classics, transformation of habitual has become the main theme of Persian Primavera studio during the past several years. |
