Arts Center of Verin

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Arts Center

INSPIRATION:
The environment. The city of Verin stands out by the heterogeneity of its blocks which have been developed around an urban nucleus. Even though each block has different shapes, the way they are set is the same in most of them. This basic premise involve the concept of the proporsal. Each use of the program is materialized as a unit, as a volume that is aligned to the edge of the plot creating a space of coexistence and relationship, without hierarchies, supporting the idea of small community.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Arts Center of Verin provides the intimacy of a home and the heterogeneity of a town. Each use of the program required is materialized as a unit, as a volume that is aligned to the edge of the plot creating a space of coexistence and relationship, without hierarchies, supporting the idea of small community. It is a place defined by its own flexibility, unpredictable. Something involuntary that occurs as a result of the relationships of their own uses.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Due to the way it is set in the plan, and the independence of its use, the center can be changed and expanded easily, because both appearance and operation are unalterable. Between volumes spaces arise as a cell. Like a small town, center visitors interpret and live spaces freely and at will. They walk from one side to another, seeking privacy behind a corner or leave, are left to see and relate. Talking about the access, the visitor could entry through a large square in the corner where the three main roads conclude. A walk that will continue inside the building to entrance the idea of town

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The construction of The Arts Center started in June 2015 in Verin, Ourense, Spain and finished in August 2016.

The flooring chosen for the square is a paving stone in the same colour as the facade, gray granite alba, 10 x 10 format. RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research of the project was how to provide the intimacy of a home at the same time as the heterogeneity of a town in a public building. The objective was to create a 'comunity' in which each block was consider independently as a unit but keeping relationship with the others. Methodology: Respecting the scheme of individual volumes to the exterior and common space to the interior, the units are sliding according to its use and leting intersticial spaces appear.

CHALLENGE:
Each part of the building must work separately and consider them like different units. How to do so but without avoiding the relationship between them was the task. In conlusion, this scheme generate numerous nucleous that interact and change depending on the use of its ocupants. The budget of the project was reduced so we decided to use local materials like the stone. Another remarkable aspect of the building: its sustainable manner, due to the materials in the urban land (Green spaces and reciclable pavement) and the installations, that allows energy and water savings

NAME:
Zooco Estudio

PROFILE:
Miguel Crespo Picot, Javier Guzmán Benito and Sixto Martín Martínez are the firm partners of Zooco Estudio, a young architectural firm with head offices in Madrid and Santander. After winning the architectural competition of The Civic Cultural Centre in Soto de la Marina,Spain, in 2008, they founded Zooco Estudio. The philosophy of the Study is to face each projects, from interior interventions to the building of large structures, through the same creative process. When developing projects of various scales, we realise that architectural decisions are the same: creating spaces that respond to needs and environment, which means the generation of a clear concept as the basis of the project. This vision of architecture and the flexibility to adapt to different projects, has made us to urderstand our profession at a time of crisis. Zooco Estudio tries to project with fine materials and simple shapes to achieve a timeless and functional aesthetic. The result we look for are neutral spaces, projects that last over time. To this end, we combine the research into new materials and systems, with the knowledge of traditional processes.
