| DESIGN NAME: Sun and Night PRIMARY FUNCTION: Textile INSPIRATION: In this project Aya Kawabata pursue the aesthetics of abstraction and create ambiguity in the form of the object. She is inspired by a timeless aesthetic that examines the void that exists between objects and the human body. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This textile embraces harmony through color and the textures of yarns. Jaquared weaving allows the combination of warp and weft that results in new colors. This technique creates the characteristic surface of tiny, three-dimensional structures. These graphical textiles can add a new skin to any wall or surface, spawning a changed environment. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Aya Kawabata is always very interested in the relationship between traditional and contemporary ideas. This weaving technique is very old and basic, but using contemporary imagery, materials, and colors gave it a new feeling. We live in the present, constantly stuck between the future and the past. So She thinks her work is always trying to connect these three different timelines. Also, the three-dimensional texture creates an interesting relationship between the viewer and the piece as they move around the room - the contours and colors of the surface shift as they move from side to side and only visible in real life. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was exhibited at DMY international design festival Berlin, London design week, Cranbrook Art museum, Pink Dot Award Exhibition between Milano Design Week, Design pier Usage gallery in Honking 2016. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Technology and technique: Jacquards weaving loom. The technique allow to mix few structures for this textile. Materials: Pearl cotton yarns, Comments: After some research, She chose this material for its unique texture and highly reflective qualities. The shadows and contours created in both natural and artificial light reveal the complex structure of the weave and give the piece a true three-dimensional feel. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Some yarns were mixed different structures or the other colors. use Jacquard weaving techniques originally used over 200 years ago - Aya chose this technique because it was perfect for creating complex texture, as well as combining different colors and materials. She mixed this classic technique with modern colors, materials, and imagery to create an interesting juxtaposition. Each textile is made with five colors yarns with 4 different weaving structures. She chose bold and reflective yarns to create a true three-dimensional feeling in the final pieces. TAGS: textile, weaving, design, graphic design, colors, interior design, visual design, fiber design, surface RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Aya spent time a lot of time researching materials and colors for this project, they were the most important components to achieve the rich colors and textures she wanted. The weaving was pretty straightforward in bringing her sketches to life. CHALLENGE: Aya wanted to use very thick yarn to provide depth and texture. However thick yarns make it hard to create detailed imagery, so had to redesign and simplify the original image. In the redesign I also narrowed the color palette because the thick yarn meant a limited amount of colors could be woven together. It was a struggle at the beginning but soon her embraced these limitations because they lead her to an interesting solution She wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. Sometimes challenges help uncover new opportunities. NAME: Aya Kawabata PROFILE: Aya Kawabata is a designer and artist from Tokyo, based in New York and Europe. Her designs are driven by her interest in colour, shadow, time, sounds and space. Before start her career as a designer, she studied classic music as a violinist from age 4 to 18. Aya is a winner of the Best New Talent Competition 2016 at DMY International Design Festival, a 2016 Pinkdot Award recipient in Milan, and was selected for the Brno Biennial. She was featured by TL mag, Vogue UK, Tokyo News Paper etc. You can find her projects in several countries such as: Japan,USA, and European countries. |
