Smart Elderly Lighting
Assisting senior people is always inspiring. We spent two months with the Old-Old elder people in a care center to find out their major problems. Continuous communication between seniors and caretakers is critical. It is not practical for the caretakers to be informed about the seniors situations specifically when they are in their beds. This problem is significant for those with Alzheimer and sleepwalking problem. Attempts are made to propose a functional solution for the mentioned situation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Falling down and leaving beds occurs for the elder people. We have designed a smart sensor-based WiFi-aided light, the Penguin, to gently light the room and notice the elder people after falling down or leaving bed. The caretaker will be informed by a vibratory bracelet. The Penguin has a unique cost-effective user-friendly design with high stability and pleasant macro structure using natural materials. Furthermore, the light color and intensity are carefully determined for an effective outcome.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Moving of the person in bed activates the motion sensor inside the Penguin. As a result, a signal is sent to the caretaker vibratory bracelet through WiFi to inform him/her. It is important to locate the Penguin sufficiently close to the bed since operation of the motion sensor depends on the distance from the moving object. The display screen in the Penguin indicates the status of battery, signal power and also it shows if the system is in the lock mood.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
As an intensive work, the presented project commenced in January 2016 in Kahrizak Charity Foundation, Tehran, Iran. The accomplishment date was in March 2016.
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Black semi-transparent Plexiglas forms the main frame. Natural wood and anodized aluminum as environmental-friendly and pleasant materials are used in front view of the Penguin. CNC machining and laser cutting can be used to avoid burrs and lead to gently smooth edges. Joining are based on mortises and tenons. Attempts are made to eliminate bolts for fastening to enhance beauty and ease of assembling of the product.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The physical dimension of the Penguin is WDH 200 x 200 x 730 mm. In addition to the basic lighting system, the Penguin includes a smart motion sensor which activates when the person in the bed moves notably including falling down or leaving the bed. At this time, the Penguin gentle light is turned on and notifying signals are sent to the vibratory bracelet for the caretaker through the WiFi system.

The increasing number of elder people is a significant issue for the global public health. Field studies were carried out in a care center and Alzheimer was found as a major threat. Falling down from bed during night sleep is one of the frequent consequences of Alzheimer. The objective of this work is to design a smart sensor-based WiFi-aided light, the Penguin, to inform caretakers when seniors fall down from or leave the bed. The Penguin is also applicable for people who sleepwalks.
Assisting seniors is always inspiring; however, it was not easy to find a cooperating care center which could legally disclose the clients files and history, as well as issuing permissions for taking photos and conducting face-to-face interview with the seniors. The other challenge was to identify frequent major problems and to assign one of them through the decision making process as the main project topic. All of the challenges were overcome by hardworking and serious following ups.
