DESIGN NAME: Urban Forest Nest
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Family House
INSPIRATION: mies van der rohe, rem koolhas.
a metaphorical 3D poetry. the long pillars like the trees trunks located on the site.
japanese interior architecture where spaces are flexible and can be transformed along the years and the family needs.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: protected urban wood and a slope site made the steel structure the best solution for building this urban nest.
every place there is an outside eye scape : inside and outside integrated.
construction system is like a "lego". parts were made in the industry and the assembly on site : respects environment, is fast and economic.
the house is "suspended" to respect the site and to give thermic comfort to its owners among the humidity of the subtropical wood.
Project designed metal structure and "ecological soul " . The metal pillars are metaphors of the trunks of the tree.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: the most amazing was the assembly of all technical construction systems.
after the foundation was made in concrete, arrived the steel structure and in 4 days it was all assembled.
1 week to the pre shaped slab...
and 1 more week to complete the "box" with the wall and roof panels.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: the project started in 2002 in Curitiba-PR, Brazil and finished one year later. It was a national architecture prize in 2007. on that time the house had already 3 years of use.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 14m gap and the woods led to the choice of steel structure : a quick , economical and environmentally friendly system.
Consequently , it determined the architectural design of the house.
The solution was to work with the verticality : respect for existing land health and to bring light , removing the house from the ground, with the shade of the trees .
The light and slender structure , allowed a minimum deforestation trees , preserving the forest to the fullest.
The metal structure is the character building this house, and it appears in its fullness both externally and internally .
It is a technical and aesthetic choice : to appreciate the beauty of the profiles , making them apparent.
Terraced gardens are present in strategic locations . In the absence of a ground plane, the solution was to create " gardens - suspended " in direct contact with the exuberant nature of the place .
[ Foreground dining room on the terrace and terrace seating in the background ] .
CHALLENGE: the biggest challenge was the construction system because it was made on a time that all was "the first time" of using and assembling all together. it was a prototype house and many paradigms were broken.
for example, the window frame industry had to disassemble it's entrance to allow the windows to go out of the industry in direction to the site.
the wall system also was first time used.
the metal roof was not used on housing projects.
etc...
