DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Lilla Table

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multifunctional Table

INSPIRATION:
The name Lilla comes from the Swedish word for little and it was a very little apartment that inspired this project. My sister is a designer living in NYC so consequently her apartment is tiny. The lack of space made her compromise on a desk instead of a dinning table. This inspired me to think of a table that wasn’t a compromise but a solution. Lilla was thoughtfully designed to look beautiful and save space in a unique way.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For many small homes the dining table is also used as a workspace. Lilla is helpful in creating a dynamic fusion between a dining table and a desk. To utilize the volume a table takes up more efficiently the Lilla table has storage space for kitchenware on one side and office supplies on the other. The tabletop is conveniently split in two for ease when storing or retrieving items. The inside has deep felt pockets to keep items organized and in place.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Lilla can be used as a table or a desk with interior storage for kitchenware and office supplies. The table top is split in half and can be opened using the inset edge. The felt lining on the edge was placed not only for comfort but to show a material change and promote interaction. The split top helps in the retrieval of items inside. The inside has deep felt pockets to keep things organized and in place. The legs can be separated for cheaper and more efficient shipping.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started December 2014 in San Francisco, and ended February 2015 in San Francisco and was exhibited at Talents Ambiente Messe Frankfurt 2015

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The table was made from maple wood with a light satin finish. The top is split in two and is joined with aluminum hinges. The outer top edge is inset with felt wrapping. The inside of the top has vacuum formed felt. The legs were cut separately and have a mortise and tenon joinery for flat pack shipping.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
As cities grow larger and more populated, our homes are becoming smaller and smaller. There has been an increasing trend for tiny homes (spaces that average 300 sq/ft). Lilla's goal is to embrace small living spaces by using space as efficiently as possible.

CHALLENGE:
Storage space is a premium in small homes, the challenge was to incorporate more storage in unexpected places. The result was a table that was cleverly designed with interior storage. Felt pockets were used in the interior of the table for storage which gave it a unique aesthetic. This solved another challenge which was making something uniquely beautiful as well as functional.
